My first semester of college, I was rather successful. In my opinion, the statement that high schools can only prepare you for admittance into college rather than the college experience is wrong and right. Nobody can prepare you for being on your own for the first time ever the way experience does. The best way for me to learn is to jump right in. Non- academically, Hjortshoj was correct. Academically, I believe my high school prepared me well to succeed. The challenges I have faced in the classroom so far have been nothing short of difficult, but I stick to my strategies I learned in high school and will continue to work hard. Other than alertness and flexibility, I think that bing self aware and knowing your limits are two very important skills for college as well.

Listening, reading, and writing are all connected through language arts. Those who do all three well tend to succeed in more than just school, as they are effective communicators and typically are good with people. You need all three to be an effective communicator because if you leave one link out, the chain is broken. In the classroom, you need to listen to what is being taught, you need to read the content effectively, and you need to be able to express your feeling on the matter in order to get consistent grades. That is what I think the role of a first year writing class is.
