In chapter one of The Transition to College Writing, Hjortshoj explains that for a college student to be successful, they need to be both alert and flexible.  Personally, I believe his argument to be true.  During my first semester of college I had a lot of things to balance such as baseball games, practices, social life, and most importantly, homework and classes.  If I was not flexible, I believe that my first semester of college wouldn't have gone so smoothly.  Of course I had the help of friends and family, but at the end of the day it was my job to be flexible with my schedule and alert to what was going on around me.  I also think that it is very important for college students to be active listeners.  This will not only help them retain more information, but also to help them build relationships, and of course, be alert to what is going on.  I think that listening, reading and writing are all connected because of the root of what they are trying ...

Finally, identify three ways that this video can teach people about community After watching the short film named "Elevator Music", I think that the authors purpose is to show what respect looks like.  In the video, it starts out with a young girl listening to "jivy" music, and an older man listening to slow tunes.  As the short film progresses, more people enter the elevator and "compete" their music on their phones with each other in volumes.  Finally, a young male comes in with a huge radio, and leaves everyone in the elevator interested as to what he would chose to play.  He pops in the disc and then to everyones surprise, pops in an earbud as well.  I think that the authors audience is meant to be the entire community. Often, we see people competing over silly unnecessary things, such as elevator music.  The author shows these people competing and being somewhat rude to one another, and then finally a young man that comes in and respect...

1. May We All  (Florida Georgia Line)  I like this song personally because of how much it relates to my childhood and my hometown.  I grew up in a small town (Blissfield), and I think that it had a really big affect on how my life has turned out.  This song is all about appreciating what you have. 2. The Ones That Didn't Make it Back Home (Justin Moore) This song really hits home for me.  I know several people who have not been able to make it home to their families because they laid down their life for the United States.  Justin Moore does a great job explaining what it is like to live in a town where our soldiers are recognized and appreciated. 3. Fast (Luke Bryan) In this song, Luke Bryan reflects on his childhood and how he believes it went too fast.  As children, most of us cannot wait to grow up and be on their own.  Now, most of us wish we could go back and take things a little bit slower.  This song is very relatable in t...

"You don't pass or fail at being a person".  In the novel Oceans at the end of the Lane,  Ginnie Hempstock states the quote above to the narrator.  Personally, I believe that Ginnie would be correct in making this statement.  Being a person means making mistakes and learning to embrace those mistakes to learn from them.  People are to love, learn, and make mistakes.  I personally have always felt strongly about not judging other peoples' lives.  We never know where someone came from, or what they have all been through.  Having said this, who are we to judge who passes and fails at life?  Too often in our society we see people dehumanizing others, meaning "depriving different peoples of positive human qualities" (Oxford University).  We can dehumanize others by not making them feel justified, not being accepting, separating people from things they love, and slowly taking away their dignity.  Most people do this to feel a sense o...

Border walls protect. Border walls divide. Which is more true? In my opinion, borders divide more than they protect. Borders can physically divide people, obviously. But they can mentally, and emotionally divide people as well. People put up these imaginary borders to keep their feelings in and others out. This creates an emotional separation in friendships and relationships.

In The Transition to College Writing , Hjortshoj defines a predatory reader as someone pauses their reading to consider the "what", "where", and "how", they are going to read. One strategy to predatory reading is reading with a conscious intention. Reading with conscious intention is when you're able to  intellectually pick the book apart and put it back together. You need to understand how the author what the author wants you to pull out of the text. Another strategy is letting yourself be absorbed in a book, it's characters, and it's plot. This is a pleasurable read, but rarely used in academic work. The five categories of the writing process that Hjortshoj identifies are prewriting or planning, composing, revising or rewriting, editing or proofreading, and release. Prewriting is about gathering your ideas together before actually forming your sentences. Composing is putting those thoughts down on paper with the thought that it may at least r...

So there's these three pigs. They're all cousins. They're all afraid of this wolf guy, right? Well they hear that the wolf is on his way in to town for the weekend. This leaves the piggies terrified. They scram and go build houses for their families to stay safe from this scary wolf dude. The first pig, lets call him Wayne, isn't the brightest. He didn't get into Yam University and didn't get the job he wanted, so not only is Wayne uneducated, he' also broke. Wayne, having the right intentions in mind, makes this little hut to protect his family. The only issue is that this hut is made of straw. When Wolfy rolls around and they don't let him in; he huffs and puffs, and blows their house down. He proceeds to eat them all. Mean ol' Mr. Wolf wipes his chops and heads down the road to Walter's house. While Walter did get into Yam U, he struggled with drug abuse his entire life and couldn't afford the mansion him and his wife had dreamt about thei...
